چکیده

Due to the disadvantages of heavy metal removal from aqueous sytems by conventional methods, alternative new methods have been investigated lately. Biosorption is one of these new methods. In this method, metal ions are transported into cell structure, and removal is ensured by several mechanisms that occured between living or non-living microorganisms and metal ions. The metal removal, the use of non-living microorganism is preferred to living ones since they don’t require continuous supply of nutrients and they can be easly implemented. Biosorption has been proved to be an effective and low-cost method of metal removal from even very dilute aqueous solutions. In this review, removal capacities of microbial biomass such as algae, fungi, yeast and bacteria are investigated for several heavy metals including Cu (II), Ni (II), Cd (II) and Cr (VI). Environmental factors , which have effect on biosorption capacity such as pH, temparature and pretreatment of biosorbent are evaluated. Isotherms used in mathematical expressions of biosorption process are also summarized.

Evaluation of Saccharum bengalense as a Non-Conventional Biomaterial for Biosorption of Mn (II) Ions from Aqueous Solutions

In this study, Saccharum bengalense(SB) was used as biosorbent for the removal of Mn (II) ions from aqueous solution. The influence of biosorbent dose, time, pH and temperature was investigated in the biosorption process. Studies showed that by increasing pH of the solution, metal removing efficiency of Saccharum bengalensefrom the aqueous environment was enhanced but to a specific extent, ...

Biosorption of Lead (II) and Zinc (II) ions by pre-treated biomass of phanerochaete chrysosporium

The biosorption of heavy metals can be an effective process for the removal of such metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this study, the adsorption properties of nonliving biomass of phanerochaete chrysosporium for Pb (II) and Zn (II) were investigated by the use of batch adsorption techniques. The effects of initial metal ion concentration, initial pH, biosorbent concentration, stirring speed...

Chromium Biosorption from Cr(VI) Aqueous Solutions by Cupressus lusitanica Bark: Kinetics, Equilibrium and Thermodynamic Studies

The present study investigated the kinetics, equilibrium and thermodynamics of chromium (Cr) ion biosorption from Cr(VI) aqueous solutions by Cupressus lusitanica bark (CLB). CLB total Cr biosorption capacity strongly depended on operating variables such as initial Cr(VI) concentration and contact time: as these variables rose, total Cr biosorption capacity increased significantly. Total Cr bio...
